FAQ Answer

I've logged in to and used BEN Reports with no problem, but get the following error when I try to access GRAM: "An I/O error occured during security authorization, please try your connection again". What's wrong?

The message indicates that you are using a web browser version that does not have the type of encryption required by GRAM, and you will need to update your browser. Information for Netscape and Internet Explorer users follows. Note that ISC strongly recommends that you update to the version of Netscape or Internet Explorer currently supported at the University. Later versions are incompatible with some University services.

For Netscape users. This is most commonly a problem for some users with Netscape versions 4.06 - 4.5. Although users with browser versions as low as Netscape 4.06 (with 40 or 128-bit encryption) can access BEN Reports, GRAM requires browsers with 128-bit encryption. The most recent supported version of Netscape (version 4.73, as of this writing) now includes 128-bit encyruption automatically: previous versions distinguished between the levels of encryption. You can download it from the Netscape Communicator page on Penn's supported products web site.

To determine which level you have, in Navigator or Communicator, go to the Help menu and select About Navigator (or Communicator). Look for the section that reads "Contains encryption software from RSA Data Security, Inc". If the next paragraph says "This version supports U.S. security", that means you have 128-bit security. If it says international security, that means you have 40-bit security. If you have the "International security" version, you should upgrade your browser to a version that supports full encryption. The current University-supported version of Netscape (4.73) includes this automatically.

For Internet Explorer users. You may see a similar message, or have difficulty displaying the GRAM login page at all. To determine what level of encryption your IE browser supports, go to the Help menu and select About Internet Explorer. The encryption level is described as "Cipher Strength". If anything less than 128-bit is listed, you should update to Internet Explorer 5.0, the current University-supported version. You can download it from the Internet Explorer page on Penn's supported products web site.
